Working with patients in regard to physical and emotional health for the last 20 years, I can tell you that besides hope and optimism, engagement is one of the most protective factors for our health. Are you engaging enough in your life? Here are some ideas for you:
1. Engagement with people-In your daily routine, pay mindful attention to people. Take the time to start a conversation, learn a little bit about others. If you know someone who does not get out much, plan a visit with them. Dr. Christopher Peterson said “other people matter”.
2. Engagement in something-Do you have a hobby, or do you love your work so much that you get into a flow and get lost in it? Watch a child when they are playing or working on coloring, they know how to become engaged. According to Dr. Martin Seligman, “engagement is one of the important building blocks of well-being and happiness”.
3. Engagement with the world-Plan to do something outside of yourself-volunteer, do something for a cause-get involved in your community or organization. Dr. Ed Diner said “fulfillment causes happiness and well-being, as well as longevity”. Sometimes we get caught up in life and don’t mindfully cultivate our well-being. Engaging is one way we can foster good health.
